And with that, Summerween comes to an end

Today is spooky and foggy and moving towards autumn. I’m not sure I’m emotionally ready for the snow (in theory, I should be safe for a few more months. But I also live in Winnipeg, so you never know).

This month is light on the news because this summer has been a whole lot of writing and submitting, and now I am at the stage where I’m waiting to see the results! So, fingers crossed that I’ll be able to share some exciting news in upcoming months! 🙂

What I have been doing over the summer is getting WAY TOO INTO commissioning character art, which has been far too much fun. So, I’ll start sharing some of that, along with links to the relevant stories!

First up is Wyndle!

She was drawn by the lovely quillathy over on Instagram (who, props to her, knew that Wyndle was a hexblood paladin without my telling her).

Wyndle was my D&D character in a Curse of Strahd campaign for years, and then post-campaign made her way into a non-D&D related short story that I wrote based off an idea that spawned from the epilogue of said campaign (basically, our DM asked us to come up with what our character would do during the epilogue, I came up with an entire novella-length idea from that, and then wrote a short story as a prequel to said unwritten novella).

If you want to end up having far too many feelings about a magical child living in the woods and a sentient tree, you can read The Dove and the Wren in Issue 22 of Indie Bites, which is available for free digitally, or at cost for print. 🙂

As mentioned, my summer was filled with writing! I finished and submitted three short stories throughout July and August!

The first one, A Dance for a Wolf, features Sophie from Time in a Bottle. This time, she’s babysitting her friend’s kid, who happens to be a werewolf and is shifting unexpectedly.

The second one, Without a Sound, is 100% the most horror thing I have ever written (in that it is absolutely, definitely horror) and features vampires.

The third one, Three Ways to Prove You Are, In Fact, a Ghost (Meow), is also set in the Sophie-verse (I think I will need to come up with a universe name for this soon), from the perspective of George, her ghost cat. I sped-wrote this in like a week and a half when I learned there was some magazine accepting stories about cats. Will this get accepted? No idea. However, Sophie now has a full name, and I now have an official backstory of how she got George, so I am pleased either way. 🙂

Okay, now to stop getting distracted by short stories and to move on to plotting and writing Of Mist and Magic #3.

Recently, we tried round two of camping – in which I did not forget pillows. In fact, I brought two pillows! And an air mattress! While it was much more comfortable than the last time and I did not get a migraine, I discovered that I…do not really like camping. So uh, it’s back to finding dog-friendly hotels/places to stay for our family adventures with Millie. I am a princess puff who cannot hack it outside.

Watching: I went to see the proshot of Hadestown with my friend at the end of July and it was sooo good. I can’t wait to see it again. ❤

Playing: I am still very very slowly making my way through Persona 3 Reload. I think I’m around the end of August/early September. So keeping up with real life, but only barely.

Reading: I recently finished reading Divine Rivals and Japanese Gothic, which are extremely different but were both extremely good five star reads for me. I highly recommend both.

Millie being cute in the tent. She definitely slept better this time with her bed, but did not love that the rain made everything outside very wet.

See you next month!
